At DragonCon, there's a place known as Artist Alley. Needless to say, I spent hours here. Last year I purchased my first three comic books and spent most of my budget in this one room. Here's a quick review of the comics I discovered. Namesake by Isabelle Melançon and Megan Lavey-Heaton![]() Summary: Every story, myth, and legend is real. It exists in a parallel universe to our own. Only a select few that share a name with the protagonist of the story are able to travel between the worlds. These chosen people are known as Namesakes. After a mysterious fire at the library, Emma is transported to the world of Oz where she is expected to take on the role of Dorothy. But she’s not Dorothy, and the Oz Emma finds herself in certainly doesn’t line up with the Oz she thought she knew. With the help of the renown Scarecrow, a munchkin named Agha, and the Wicked Warlock of the West, Emma travels through the corrupted world of Oz so that she can complete the Dorothy Procedure and return home. Review: Namesake takes the well known story of The Wizard of Oz and turns it into a truly unique tale. As a huge fan of dark fairy tales (I’m looking at you Splintered), I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The storytelling is incredible, the characters are dynamic, and the book just transports you into the world, just like Emma was. The art was unique, and the style really matched the mood set by the story. Rating: 7/10 Read It: Namesake is an online comic, although I bought the hard copy of Book 1 at DragonCon last year. You can purchase the paperback here, or you can read the whole comic online at namesakecomic.com. Night’s Dominion by Ted Naifeh![]() Summary: “It starts off like any other adventure…” A thief, an assassin, a bard, a cleric, and a mage gather around a table, planning to rob an untold treasure hidden beneath the home of a group of cultists. However, the heist goes awry when the group discovers something much more sinister than a hidden cavern of gold. With this rising threat, heroes emerge ready to save the city of Umber from itself. Review: Ted Naifeh described his story to me as “superheroes in the medieval ages” when I spoke to him at DragonCon last year. I was immediately intrigued as to how heroes like Superman or The Flash would fit in a high fantasy setting. In all honesty, the book didn’t live up to expectations. The beginning of the book was confusing, and the characters were hard to follow. The ending managed to return to the original idea of “heroes in the middle ages”, and with that, it became more interesting for about a chapter and a half. The art for the comic is good, but it can be hard to decipher at some points. At least the dialogue pattern was easy to follow, which is something that I’ve found has become increasingly complex in newer comics. Rating: 5/10 Read It: Night’s Dominion is only available in print. If you’re interested in purchasing a copy for yourself, you can find it on Amazon here. Star Power and the 9th Wormhole by Michael Terraciano and Garth Graham![]() Summary: Danica lives on Space Station Sanctuary Six where she works as an assistant astronomer searching for the source of a strange light emission. Although encouraged to ignore it, Danica becomes enthralled with a star she’s named “Mitch.” Mitch isn’t just an ordinary star, and he’s chosen Danica to wield a cosmic energy known as the Star Power. With the creation of a new Star Powered Sentinel, a powerful enemy emerges, determined to eliminate the last of the Star Power and take control of the Millenium Federation. Danica must quickly master her new powers and fight to save a universe that holds much more danger than she could’ve ever imagined. Review: This comic is a masterpiece. I don’t usually read a lot of sci-fi, and I was thrilled that I stumbled upon such an amazing comic. I couldn’t put this book down. In addition to the stunning artwork, the plot draws you in, the characters are relatable, and it has the perfect blend of action and comedy. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone. Rating: 8.5/10 Read It: If you do decide to read the Star Power series, I encourage you to read the story behind why and how Star Power was created. It’s very interesting. If you want to purchase the hard copy like I did, you can find it here. This is also an online comic. You can find it at starpowercomic.com. If you read any of these comics, let me know what you think in the comments, and as always,
Stay Creative, Alexa C.
