Last year was my first time going to any kind of convention, and it went better than I could’ve imagined. I went to DragonCon, an annual convention that takes place in Atlanta in the fall, with a group of people from my church. In addition to going to my first convention, I also made my first cosplay. ![]() I went as Belle from the live action Beauty and the Beast. I was up until 3 am the morning of the first day finishing it, but DragonCon was so incredible that I barely noticed my exhaustion. On the first day, we didn’t even know what to do. As we wandered around, I was enthralled with the beautiful and intricate cosplays others were wearing. All I wanted to do was sit down and watch people. Everyone was so nice, too. My dad had been worried about all the “weirdos” that go to cons, but the best part of a con is everyone is there to have a good time. Even when we passed by someone protesting the entire event, yelling at everyone, telling them they were going to Hell. The people attending the convention just laughed it off. During the convention, I went to a bunch of panels. Many of them were about writing, but I also saw Stan Lee and Matt Smith from Doctor Who. I went to a panel of a bunch of authors including Christopher Paolini, author of The Inheritance Cycle, and got to listen and ask question about their writing and world development process. My favorite part was probably the vendor area, or more specifically, Artist Alley. I spent a lot of time on the first day of the event just wandering through the aisles of all the vendors. 3 floors worth. Many of the items being sold were homemade. Everyone was so incredibly talented. I went up to the third floor (Artist Alley) and my jaw dropped. Creators of all types of books, comics, paintings, and drawings had their work hanging on walls or wire racks. It was amazing. I wish that I had written this closer to the time of the event so that I could remember everything that happened. The high of DragonCon is indescribable, and I can’t wait to experience it again in September. This year I’ll be taking Ashlyn with me. It’ll be her first time, so I’m sure you’ll get a much better feel for what it’s like when she writes about it than you have with me. We’ll most likely be vlogging the event, so you’ll get to see how amazing it is for yourself. Anyways, that’s my spiel. I had one of the best weekends of my life last year, and I can’t wait to go do it again. Stay Creative, Alexa C.
